Vlora’s Epopee, which secured the country’s independence, began on the evening of June 11, 1920. Albanian rebels attacked the Italian invaders and after bloody fighting, entered Vlora by unleashing the defense of the regular army, armed to the teeth. The attack and the victories of Albanian volunteers, had great echoes across the Adriatic. Italian workers rose to strikes and demonstrates, demanding the government to stop the war and attract invading armies from Albania. On the skeletons of the Adriatic, in Trieste, Ancona, Bari, Brindisi, was called on soldiers not to leave in Vlora. The demonstrators, but also the soldiers who joined them, clashed with the police.
