Charles I of Anjou, through a declaration addressed to Arbëresh, dated on February 21st, 1272, announced the formation of the Kingdom of Arbër (Regnum Albanum) and proclaimed himself King of Arbëria (Rex Albania). This important state-building event in our nation’s history relates to the Albanian feudal class and the weakening of the Byzantine Empire. Arbërit in these conditions participate directly in the political-military events for the legacy of empire; those were included in the great uprising of the years 1257-1258 and enter into agreements with anjuins. The King Charles I, took Durrës and from Napoli announced the creation of the Kingdom of Arbër.
