In the surroundings of Lake Ohrid, in May 1916, it was accidentally found the helmet of the Illyrian king Monun today preserved in the Museum of Antiquities in Berlin. In its interior is preserved the Latin inscription “Bazi leos Monounion” which means “King Monun’s Helmet”. His name is also engraved in some silver coins. The inscription of the helmet and the coins have the same calligraphy, which proves their production in the country by Illyrian artisans. Monun, ruled about 280 BC, re-invading the Illyrian state with lands from the Adriatic coast, to the borders with Macedonia.
