The first teacher of Albanian language, the ardent propagator of national ideas in Berat district, Jorgji Karbunara was born on May 5th, 1842. He was educated in Corfu and Trieste. After returning to the Homeland, he devoted entirely to the issue of national liberation and teaching of the Albanian language. This was followed and persecuted by Ottoman invaders, Greek chauvinists, and the country’s reaction. He was the initiator of the opening of the first Albanian school in Berat in August 1908, and of the establishment of the patriotic club “Bashkimi”. In November 1912, he attended the National Assembly of Vlora and was elected to his elders.
