Karl Gega
The Albanian scientific world, on January 10th, celebrates the birth anniversary of the prominent Albanian engineer Karl Gega, Doctor of Mathematics; he was born in Venice in 1802. After the graduation he has worked for the opening of the roads in mountainous of northern Italy. As engineer and chief engineer he designed and built several roads, bridges, dams, canals and buildings. Under his direction it was built the railway Vienna-Graz-Trieste, which was inaugurated in 1844. He designed and insisted on the construction of the railway and mountain tunnel of Semmering, which was opposed by his colleagues and led Karl Gega in suicide. The successful completion of this hard building work immortalized the prominent Albanian engineer. Even today, in Semmering station is lifted his memorial.
