On 9 July 1999, Albania was admitted as the 35th member of the Council of Europe’s Social Development Fund. Established since 1956, this is the oldest intergovernmental European financial institution. As a multilateral developmental bank, it supports projects to assist refugees and victims of natural disasters, projects on health, education, job creation and infrastructure development.
