Hodo Sokoli successfully led the protection of Hoti and Gruda, which ended with the withdrawal of Montenegrin forces and the failure of their plans to conquer Albanian lands. He led 5000 valiant highlanders, against 10000 soldiers and Montenegrin officers in numerous battles that lasted from April to July. The last defeat the Montenegrins suffered on July 28, 1880.
